Healthy snacks for late night hunger pangs

If you’re one of those typical owls who like to stay up late at night, you probably end up raiding your kitchen and eating whatever you can lay your hands on. Isn’t it? Well, studies have found that the hunger hormone called ‘ghrelin’ is known to increase in response to fasting and recurrent feeding patterns. And this is what makes you so hungry.

The urge for midnight snacking or sudden food cravings often happens when you have an early dinner and sleep late. Your body suddenly feels depleted and gives you hunger pangs making you binge in the middle of the night. Sometimes, if you skip meals during the day or do not get sufficient calories, your body feels the urge to eat in the middle of the night. However, these are not the only reasons. Things like hunger pangs can have various reasons like lack of sleep, depression or just boredom.

So if you avoid eating anything before bedtime and go to bed hungry, it may not be ideal. Many experts are of the opinion that you should not go to bed with a rumbling stomach. Instead, opt for a snack that is high-protein and low-carb.
