Flaxseeds come from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). Flaxseed oils are naturally occurring oils, which are derived from flax seeds that are pressed and removed. It has a neutral, pleasant taste. A flaxseed is about 40% oil by weight. Of this oil, 55% of it is omega-3 fatty acid.
Flaxseed is unique because, traditionally, the oil has not been used much. The seed, however, has been used whole, cracked, or ground into flour then used in baked products. Flaxseed is frequently sprinkled on breakfast cereals and salads and is found in some fruit juice drinks.
